THE CAPTAIN
Capt. Barry Kohlus is one of Montauk's second generation charterboatmen, who
has spent his entire adult life, except for a stint in the army, fishing.
His father, Boots, moved his family from Valley Stream to Greenport in
1948, after selling his gas station and house and having the first VENTURE
built. The VENTURE, a forty two foot downeast type boat was run as a charter
boat out of Greenport, and occasionally out of Montauk until 1955, when
Boots finally moved his boat and family full time to Montauk.
|
| Barry worked as a mate either for his father on
the VENTURE, his father's second boat the VENTURE II with Capt Fred
Thompson, or for Capt Frank Pike on the LEATHERNECK.
Winters were spent fishing in Dania Florida with his father, until the expenses involved in moving the boat back and forth made the business unprofitable. But instead of remaining in Montauk for the winters, Barry took over as captain on the CHEVY WON, a private boat that also doubled as a charter boat. His reputation fishing for sailfish eventually won him the job of captain on the PENADE, a private boat that specialized in tournament fishing. While running the PENADE Barry won the prestigious Masters Angling Tournament two years running, in 1988 and 1989. The Masters was one of the first catch and release type tournaments. Its winner was determined by a complicated scoring system that rewarded the angler with points for the fastest catch time on sailfish that had to be fought using a maximum sixteen pound test line, and fought from a dead boat using barbless hooks. In the early 80's Boots decided he wanted to retire and Barry gradually took over his father's business, running the boat as captain one day a week, adding an additional day each year until eventually taking over the job full time. It was during this transition time, that the present VENTURE . A full winter was spent restoring the boat before it was deemed suitable to be run as a charter boat here in Montauk. Barry currently operates the VENTURE out of the Star Island Yacht Club. |
