San José to Pueto Jiménez.
The 45 minute flight to Puerto
Jiménez is over cloud-laced coffee, banana, and palm oil plantations,
skirts a coast of postcard, miles-long beaches and winding rivers, onto
the "Sweet Gulf" that is home to Crocodile Bay Lodge. Clearing the runway
of dogs, bicylists, and schoolkids taking the short cut, your plane lands
on a strip that would make Indiana Jones feel right at home. The waiting
(CBL) van then takes you the 2 minute ride to the Lodge where, tropical
drink in hand you can decide how to start your adventure vacation.

Fly fishing
"I love catching snapper on the
fly, and one of the most productive ways of doing that in Crocodile Bay’s
waters is to tell fishing director Todd Staley that this is what you want
to try. Todd will then tell your captain the day before your exploratory
trip, so he can go out and get some small baitfish that you will use as
chum. You’ll be in one of the flats boats, which whisk you to places like
Mogos, the very back of the Golfo Dulce, and the mouths of the Rio
Esquinas, Rio Tigre and Rio Rincon." — Bob Newman’s Outdoor Zone” on AM
760 KKZN in Denver.
Blue water fishing
Things were off to a
bang when Danny Young's group of four raised 59 sails in two days of
fishing and then things went a little nutso... Carl McCants's 80 pound
roosterfish was top dog on the inside. Not many roosters are falling to
anglers offerings but most that did went over 50 lbs. Bjour Odenbro from
Sweden had a big day on the water when he bagged 11 roosters and 9 big
jacks. A couple of nice African pompano hit the dinner plates as well as
cubera snapper. — Todd Staley's Crocodile Bay Fishing Report
Inshore fishing
The species most sought
after is the Roosterfish. Twenty-five to fifty pound fish are very common
and we catch a couple over 50 each week. The lodge record is 106 lbs...
Other species caught inshore include but are not limited to Barracuda,
several types of Jacks, Snook, Bonito, Mackerel, African Pompano, Bluefin
Trevally, Rainbow Runners, Shark, etc.
Surfing
Pavones Excellent left point,
considered one of the longest in the world. Good shape and very fast. Out
on the peninsula across Pavones, a half-hour boat ride away, is reputedly
a series pf right points the equivalent of Pavones1&Mac218;2world
class lefts.
Matapalo Excellent right point located in front of
Pavones. Perfect waves.
Diving
For a first hand look at the
beautiful inhabitants of Costa Rica's Pacific Ocean we offer scuba diving
at Cano Island. For certified divers only. While diving in the Pacific
waters of Costa Rica you have the chance to see Parrotfish, Angelfish, the
Spotted Green Puffer, the Spotted and Freckled Porcupinefish, the Panamic
Soldierfish, Blunthead Triggerfish, Southern Stingray, Lesser Devil Ray,
Spotted Eagle Ray, Manta Ray, and the Whale Shark.
Bird watching
Venture inland to see the
birds of the secondary rainforest on a section of the Tigre River called
Dos Brazos. This is an excellent area for viewing inland birds because it
is a secondary rainforest, which envelops a grand river. In this area it
is common for us to view such species as the Laughing Falcon, the Yellow
Headed Caracara, Squirrel Cuckoo, Purple Gallinule, Northern Jacana, the
Blue-crowned Motmot, the four types of indigenous species of Kingfishers
(Amazon, American Pygmy, Green, and Ringed), four species of flycatchers
(Common Tody, Boat-billed, Gray-capped, and Social), five species of
Tanagers (Bay-headed, Black-cheeked, Blue-gray, Golden-hooded, and
Passerini's), and the spectacled owl.
Gold panning
You have the choice of viewing
a short example of how the panning works, or you can actually work the
stream for gold. If you choose to work the stream, please note that it is
a physical activity which requires shoveling and standing in the
stream.
Waterfall rappelling
For those who are
looking for pure excitement on their vacation we offer rainforest
waterfall rappelling! This is an excellent chance to get your adrenaline
pumping while seeing the beauty of the rainforest at the same time. We use
only the most experienced guides with the newest equipment to provide you
with the highest level of safety available.
Horseback riding
Explore beaches and
rainforests on horseback. A great way to cover lots of ground in an
afternoon where roads are sometimes either an exaggeration or nonexistant.
