Captain Tom Herlihy got started in the fishing business early. By the age of 11 he was pinhooking for striped bass, bluefish and fluke on his fathers skiff here in Montauk, and peddling them to the local restaurants. Of course he was only allowed to go as far as Shagwong, but he learned that area very well indeed. By the age of 13, and all through high school he was working summers as a mate. After a year at college, in 1975, he made up his mind to pursue fishing as his primary career, and started mating for captain Dave McMahon on the MARIE III, a direct decendent of one of Montauk's original charter boats. After twelve years as Dave's apprentice, Tom bought the boat and business. It only took a year before he realized that the MARIE III, an old wooden boat, was not the one that he would keep forever. A 42' Bruno and Stillman charterboat in Connecticut came on the market, and he jumped on it, renaming it the HERL'S GIRL. |
