Costa Rica is Central America's most popular tourist destination, but is an especially attractive destination for fishing. On the Caribbean coast, the tarpon is king, with the fishing taking place in the jungle rivers or outside the river mouths. On the Pacific, billfishing is hot all year, with sailfish, and marlin as well as dorado & tuna available just about all year. Inshore, fishing for roosterfish, snapper and other species offer a change of pace. The well developed tourist industry makes it an attractive option for a combination of family/fishing vacation For more information about customized fishing |

Guatemala undoubtedly has the world's best sailfishing. The numbers of fish caught and released there staggers the imagination, with the daily count more likely to be in double digits than single ones. Possibly the fact that it is illegal to bring a billfish ashore has something to do with it, but who cares what the reason is, as long as you can get there and get in on the action. If you want to catch a black marlin, go fishing in Panama. In the past there were only two choices of where in the country to go. But in recent years new operations have been opened. For certain lodges you still have to plan your trip a year or more in advance, at least for the prime January through March season when the black marlin fishing is at it's peak. But, throughout the year, in addition to the black marlin, there are giant yellowfin tuna, blue marlin and lots of sailfish. If that doesn't get your motor running, there is some unbelievable inshore and reef fishing, all taking place at remote locations, where the only people you'll see are your fellow anglers. Belize is a light tackle fisherman's idea of paradise. From it's super clear waters along the reef to its myriad clusters of mangrove islands, it has some kind of fishing for everybody. Although fishing for bonefish, tarpon and permit is most in demand, you can catch as many as two dozen different species of fish in a weeks time, including wahoo, snapper, grouper, jacks, barracuda, kingfish, tuna as well as occasional sailfish and marlin. As an added attraction, snorkeling and diving in Belize is nothing short of sensational. For more information about fishing |

Cancun is a well known tourist magnet, drawing millions each year to party all night and lie on the beach all day. But, don't forget about the fishing. A couple of hours south of there is Ascencion Bay, one of the best places around to take a "Flats Grand Slam" consisting of bonefish, permit and tarpon. The road that takes you there is a killer, with the last fifteen miles taking an hour, but maybe that's a good thing. It guarantees that it will never be another Cancun. But, if you need the night life, there's some pretty good flats fishing only forty-five minutes from Cancun as well. Want to mix things up? Try a day on the flats followed by a day fishing on the blue water. American boats from all over the Gulf Coast and Florida flock to the area for the red hot spring billfishing.
